Silver Memento Mori Skull Pendant W/ Sapphire Eyes 32.8 Grams. This rare Victorian Era sterling silver pendant with old-cut sapphire eyes and a carnelian back is an outstanding example of memento mori jewelry. Memento Mori (Remember you must die) jewelry, macabre as its various manifestations were, was meant to remind one that life is finite, fleeting and should be lived accordingly. This 19th Century example features a strikingly rendered and very nicely cast skull with an unusually detailed and expressive face, a pair of old-cut blue sapphire eyes glittering from deep eye sockets, and a rosy-orange carnelian back.
In excellent condition, the sapphires measure 2.25-mm, the carnelian measures 29-mm, and the pendant tests positive for sterling silver, measures 1 1/2-inches overall top-to-bottom including its original jump-ring and weighs 32.8 grams.
