Sterling silver bow brooch with gold vermeil highlights. 3.25 inches by 2.5 inches. Triple loop bow with rosette center and sprays of tiny florets.
Marked "Hobé 1/20th/14k on Sterling Silver" and "DESIGN PAT'D" on an affixed round disc on the back of the brooch. Similar in design to patent 138,933 filed by W. Hobe in September of 1944 - this seems to be larger and heavier than some brooches of this design. During WWII Hobé and other US jewelry companies used sterling silver in the late due to a scarcity of other metals which were being used in the war effort.
This gave rise to what became a signature style for Hobe -- silver bow and spray brooches. One of Hobé's advertising slogans was "Jewels of Legendary Splendor" and their high quality jewelry lives up to that claim. One of the things I find most interesting about Hobé is the variety of styles the company made over the years -- all of it beautiful and stylish.
